The Mary Reibey Scholarshi
31-May-2010 It has been a long held desire to celebrate Westpac's association with Australia's first women entrepreneur, Mary Reibey (pronounced Ray-be). The Reserve Bank of Australia has honoured Mary's entrepreneurial spirit by placing her portrait on the $20 note.On her husband's premature death in 1811, the former convict and then mother of seven, Mary Reibey took over and expanded the overseas trading operations and property interests of her husband's company, Entally House.
Westpac's association with Mary is that she was their very first landlord as well as one of their first shareholders. The first Bank of New South Wales opened in 1817 in a property built by her late husband, Thomas Reibey, and later owned by Mary.
Together with the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM), Westpac Women's Markets propose to celebrate this association through offering two scholarships, The Mary Reibey Scholarship, to the businesswomen of Australia.
The winners of the scholarship will undertake the General Manager Program offered by AGSM Executive Programs. This Program is a five and a half day residential course suitable for a business owner or high achieving executive. It focuses on building expertise in core business disciplines. There is an application process for the Scholarship and the winners will be announced on Wednesday 14 July.
Dr Rosemary Howard, Executive Director and Cojoint Professor, AGSM Executive Programs, has kindly offered one position on The General Manager Program, valued at $12,000, to Westpac Women's Markets on a yearly basis in perpetuity.
Westpac will be matching this generous gift from the AGSM and providing the second scholarship as an opportunity for a rural woman to participate.
